Modi held extensive discussions with Hasina on ways to strengthen ties between the two countries after which he announced a line of concessional credit of United States dollars 4.5 billion for implementation of projects in Bangladesh.

The treaty calls for 50:50 sharing of the waters of River Teesta between West Bengal and Bangladesh during the lean season. Modi said that, just like India, he wants neighboring countries also to focus on development, which would help the development of the entire region.

Prime Minister Modi also, without naming Pakistan, hit out at the neighbour in the West during the felicitation programme for perpetrating atrocities on Bangladesh population, then East Pakistan.

"The story of their sacrifice will be remembered from generation to generation in our countries", Prime Minister Hasina said in her statement while exhorting both countries to work towards "shared peace and prosperity".

"We always think about the people of our region and our main aim is to develop the living conditions of the people of this region, and I believe that sub-regional cooperation is very important for development", Hasina told journalists.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, meanwhile, said it was an occasion to also remember the thousands killed in Bangladesh by the Pakistani Army and its militia allies.

The Bangladesh Prime Minister arrived in the national capital yesterday on a four-day visit to India.

Modi, in his speech, tried to draw Mamata's attention and make her understand that it is important for his government to get her green signal to the Teesta to show that India can deliver its commitments, even though late. The Prime Minister further said that he was happy that India had provided scholarships to more than 10,000 children of Mukti Jodhas or those who fought for liberation.
