  • Twitter creates 'lite' version for data-starved users

The new service was announced on Twitter's blog today by product manager Patrick Traughber.

The service incorporates much of traditional Twitter, including your timeline, Tweets, Direct Messages, profiles, media uploads, and notifications.

According to the global mobile phone operators group, GSMA, there were 3.8 smartphone connections globally at the end of 2016.Of those, 45 percent use slower 2G networks. But unlike the app, Twitter says that Lite can consume up to 70% less data and launches 30% faster. It also features a further data saving mode that blurs images and video until the user taps on them.

While the Twitter Lite experience offers some perks to all types of users, it will also help the platform spread into emerging markets like Asia Pacific and Latin America, where cellular data is expensive and connections are spotty.

Facebook launches tool to help users spot false news
Check whether the source is known for parody, and whether the story's details and tone suggest it may be just for fun. Countries getting the fake news prompt include the United States, Germany, the U.K., Brazil and Mexico.

The company calls the version Twitter Lite and it will be aimed largely at users outside the United States.

Twitter Lite is a client-side JavaScript application and a small, simple Node.js server. Meanwhile, on Tuesday, YouTube also unveiled a low-data mobile app designed for India, and Microsoft very owned Skype also launched a lite version of its app to Android users earlier this year in February. For the unfamiliar, the new Lite version is a Progressive Web App (PWA), built in partnership with Google.

By using Chrome on Android, you can enable push notifications without using the app - which removes the need for the Twitter app nearly entirely. The company said Vodafone subscribers in India would "receive an SMS alert with a link to the special curated timeline on Twitter Lite where (they) can get live updates on the T20 cricket season". Dubbed Twitter Lite, the browser-based incarnation of the microblogging site saves on data usage and takes up less than a megabyte of a device's storage space.

Twitter Lite also comes with other useful features when it's being used on modern web browsers like Google Chrome on Android devices.
