Hotel workers at the Quality Inn and Suites in Niles, Michigan called local authorities around 10 a.m. local time Saturday morning after they noticed several children lying unconscious near the hotel's indoor pool area.

Two Niles police officers, two Berrien County Sheriff's deputy, as well as one hotel employee were also taken to the hospital after their arrival, but were later released.

Carbon monoxide readings in the hotel's enclosed pool area were 16 times higher than normal levels, the fire department told the news station. Police said she had just been in the pool area with the other children.

The child - later identified by police as Bryan Douglas Watts, 13, of Niles - died en route to a local hospital, while the other children were transported to Memorial Hospital of South Bend, Indiana. Wise said a pool heater could have caused the problem, but that is still under investigation. Responding officers were able to get the girl to respond to them and she was able to walk outside to an ambulance, police said. The hotel had never had issues like this before, Niles said.

An inspection by a mechanical engineer showed the cause was a malfunction in the pool heater, the Niles Fire Department told WSBT.

As authorities worked to remove and resuscitate the children, the hotel was evacuated as a precaution.

"At that level you only have minutes in there before you're going to have health affects", Wise said.

The hotel is closed and Wise says it is unlikely to re-open Saturday.
