The Optane SSD DC P4800X is available in limited quantities beginning on Sunday, for $1,520 (£1,227), with general availability scheduled for the second half of this year. The chip maker has unveiled the Optane SSD DC P4800X, a drive destined for the PCI Express or NVMe slots in servers.

With these characteristics, the Intel Optane SSD product will be significantly useful in expanding the reach of cloud solutions.

This also enables data centres to deliver more affordable memory pools by displacing a portion of DRAM or significantly increase the size of memory pools. The Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X Series is created to boost scale per server and accelerate applications.

It isn't too much of a stretch to say that memory technologies have essentially transformed IT markets.

Investment will be promoted for industrial development and it will be done for economic development", Adityanath added. A senior Congress party leader, Veerappa Moily, said Adityanath's selection was "an assault on secularism".

Delivering an industry-leading combination of low latency, ultra endurance, high QoS, and high throughput, the Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X Series is the most responsive data center SSD.1 Built with the revolutionary new 3D XPoint™ memory media, the SSD DC P4800X is the first product to combine the attributes of memory and storage. Intel said it expects the cost structure to be closer to that of NAND than of DRAM.

Intel, facing challenges in its core business making processors for personal computers and servers, hopes the new technology can expand its memory business, which reported revenue of $2.6 billion in the past year. Whereas server DRAM modules now top out at 128GB, the first P4800X drive has 375GB of capacity.

Intel argues that current storage approaches based on DRAM and NAND are contributing to the current datacenter storage gap, and that storage platform increasingly need to behave "like system memory".

Intel also offered figures in support of its claims, with latency times quoted as less than 60 or 100 microseconds for 99.999 percent of the operations with a queue depth of 1. Intel has stated earlier that these drives will be eight times faster than the ordinary SSDs that are available in the market. The drive is also rather resilient as it will be used in data centers which write and rewrite swathes of data at a time.
