  • Microsoft Admits Forcing More Users Onto Windows 10

"Because of how this support policy is implemented, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 devices that have [modern processors] may no longer be able to scan or download updates." the support document states.

Responding to a request on the subject, a spokesperson said "As new silicon generations are introduced, they will require the latest Windows platform at that time for support". "Your PC uses a processor that isn't supported on this version of Windows", it said.

Naturally, Microsoft tells us that the solution here is to update to AMD's Bristol Ridge or Ryzen, Intel's Kaby Lake, or Qualcomm's 8996. Older-generation CPUs (including Intel's sixth-generation Skylake) will support Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 until January 14, 2020, and January 10, 2023, respectively.

Windows 7 is to receive security updates until January 14, 2020, while Windows 8.1's support is to end on January 10, 2023.

The company's previous methods of convincing users to make the jump have upset some, and this policy is sure to ruffle feathers as well.

The new Microsoft Surface Pro is expected to carry the latest Intel Kaby Lake processor chip, but there are rumors that it might be replaced with one of AMD's new architecture chips.

Saudi Arabia, China sign deals worth potentially $65 billion
Chinese navy vessels also visited the Saudi port of Jeddah as part of increasingly active maneuvers in the Gulf of Aden. Asian countries are vital importers of Saudi oil, and the country wants to boost sales to China.

Users have noted that devices running older versions of Windows are unable to download and install vital updates, potentially leaving their PCs at risk of attack.

Microsoft has warned that new computers running the latest Intel and AMD chips will only run Windows 10. But what that does also mean is that if there are additional things added to Windows that you dislike, you won't have any option to use an old version of Windows instead. Windows 7 debuted in 2009, and Windows 8.1 was released in 2013.

It seems clear, though, that Microsoft doesn't want these processors to work on their older operating systems. Intel hinted that something similar would happen for Kaby Lake support previous year.

Code 80240037 Windows Update encountered an unknown error.

But having updates blocked obviously takes the risk factor to a whole new level. The company then decreed that Windows 10 would be the only supported edition on seventh-generation and later CPUs and simultaneously dictated a substantial shortening of Windows 7 support.
