SHOOTING A shootout erupted at the Alexis de Tocqueville school this morning

The suspect has not been publicly identified.

The teen was carrying a rifle, two handguns and two grenades in the attack at the Alexis de Tocqueville high school in the sleepy hillside city of Grasse, police told AFP.

A few other students suffered minor injuries as they tried to flee from the shooter.

One person has been arrested following the shooting, according to a special police unit on site, BFM TV reports. It is not clear whether the incidents are linked.

All schools in the vicinity of Grasse have been placed on lockdown as a safety measure, since the shooting prompted a red alert on the nation's Vigipirate terror warning system.

One student reported hearing four gunshots, while another student, speaking to Nice Matin (in French), described hearing three loud bangs before turning and seeing a shooter.

Families plead for Somali pirates to release ship's crew
The ship had been carrying fuel from Djibouti to Somalia's capital, Mogadishu , when it was approached by men in two skiffs. The gunmen have told a local official that they are fishermen whose equipment was destroyed by illegal fishing vessels.

Several terrorist attacks have took place in France over the past few months.

Terrified parents were also warned not to approach the school as elite special forces moved in to secure the area.

Local emergency services used Twitter to advise residents of the town of about 50,000 inhabitants to stay at home.

The attack came shortly after a letter bomb exploded at the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund in Paris.

The incident comes with France in a state of emergency after several militants attacks over the previous year.

A school shooting, which left three students and a headteacher wounded, appears to have been a "crazy act" carried out by a teenager obsessed with firearms, France's education minister says.
