Ten people were injured Thursday by an explosion from one of the craters of Etna which is now active, local sources said.

"Lava flow mixed with steam caused huge explosion - group pelted with boiling rocks and steam".

"Everyone taken off the mountain - rescue team and guides here were brilliant", she wrote on Twitter, adding: "bbc team all ok - some cuts/ bruises and burns".

Morelle said the explosion was "a reminder of how risky (and) unpredictable volcanoes can be".

The USGS says phreatic eruptions can generate "an explosion of steam, water, ash, blocks, and bombs" as surface water is heated by lava as hot as 2,100 degrees.

Ten people were reportedly hurt during an eruption of the volcano, which is the highest and most active in Europe. The activity was reported at its southeast crater. Departures will continue as scheduled.

Video filmed Wednesday shows bursts of lava and volcanic ash as the mountain exploded nearly constantly throughout the day, according to Italy's Geology and Vulcanology Institute, which published the footage.

Rebecca then explained everyone made it off the mountain okay, although some had small injuries.

According to Italian newspaper La Repubblica, the explosion could be seen from Catania and nearby towns at the bottom of the mountain. "There were 10 injuries but none serious", he said.

She let her 13.8k followers in on the experience, and explained what caused the explosion.

News science correspondent Rebecca Morelle described the incident as "extremely scary".

"Volcanologist said [it was the] most risky incident experienced in his 30-year career".

One of the world's most active volcanoes, Mount Etna spewed lava up into the sky in the early hours of Thursday for the third time this year after it began erupting in late February.
