Intel Acquiring Mobileye For Autonomous Driving Technology

  • Intel reportedly acquiring Mobileye's self-driving car technology in $15 billion deal

BMW announced in January it would deploy 40 self-driving vehicles for tests in the United States and Europe this year.

"By pooling together our infrastructure and resources, we can enhance and accelerate our combined know-how in the areas of mapping, virtual driving, simulators, development tool chains, hardware, data centres and high-performance computing platforms". "The transaction is unique in the sense that instead of Mobileye being integrated into Intel, Intel's Automated Driving Group (ADG) will be integrated into Mobileye", the two co-founders wrote. The Israeli company now utilizes STM chips for the products it provides auto manufacturers with.

The Qualcomm-NXP deal, which will create the industry's largest portfolio of sensors, networking and other elements vital to autonomous driving, is expected to close later in 2017, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals.

Last summer, BMW announced it would work with Intel and Mobileye to bring self-driving cars to mass production by 2021.

It is the biggest technology takeover in Israel's history and the largest purchase of a company exclusively focused on self-driving. Intel and Mobileye's technology is to be tested on roads in the United States and Europe.

"Israel is becoming a global technology center not only in the field of cyber but also the automotive field". By 2030, Intel projects that the market for smart vehicle systems, data and services will hit $70 billion.

Trump to Palestinian leader: It's time for peace
The Palestinian leader called for a "Palestine and Israel, living side by side on the pre-1967 borders in peace and security". Mahmoud Abbas has been invited to visit the White House by Donald Trump to discuss resuming peace talks.

The deal also seemed to be a recognition that Intel was not moving as quickly as competitors.

The move comes as Intel ramps up investment in the automotive industry to become a leader in self-driving technology.

The American chipmaker announced it will purchase the company for $15.3bn (£12.5bn) in a record breaking deal that marks the highest price paid for an autonomous driving specialist and for an Israeli tech company.

"Mobileye's technology is very critical..." It is said that the deal is made "in an effort to boost the chipmaker's position in the autonomous auto market".

Intel, for quite some time, had teamed up with Israel based computer vision firm Mobileye. Even Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated the company: "Congratulations to Mobileye!".
