Mahmoud Abbas has been invited to visit the White House by Donald Trump to discuss resuming peace talks.
Trump told Abbas that a peace deal must be negotiated directly between Israel and the Palestinians and that the United States would work closely with both sides toward that goal, the White House said in a statement.
Wafa also quoted Abbas' spokesman, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, who spoke of Trump's "commitment to a peace process that would lead to a real peace between Palestinians and Israelis".
At that meeting, Trump said he was not bound to the two-state solution for ending the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, distancing himself from a position held by his predecessors for years. Trump's planned phone call to Abbas was revealed in a White House notice Friday, March 10, 2017.
Last month, Trump said at a joint press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Israel should delay building new settlements in the West Bank in order to reach a peace deal with Palestine.

I think they very much would like to will make a deal, or I wouldn't be happy and I wouldn't be here and I wouldn't be as optimistic as I am.
During the campaign, Trump said he did not necessarily see settlements as an obstacle to peace. Israeli and U.S. officials are now discussing what the parameters are on settlements. "I can live with either one", Mr Trump said, causing consternation across the Arab world and in many European capitals. Netanyahu visited the White House in mid-February.
It was announced by Trump's spokesman Sean Spicer.
