Bottled water has become the biggest selling packaged beverage by volume in the USA for the first time, according to recently-released research.

Research from the Beverage Marketing Corporation says growing health concern about sugary drinks is a factor. Carbonated soft-drink per-capita consumption exceeded 50 gallons as recently as 2006. In 2015, bottled water was at 36.5 gallons while soda was at 39 gallons.

"Bottled water effectively reshaped the beverage marketplace", Michael Bellas, chairman-CEO of Beverage Marketing Corp., said in a statement.

Of course, just because Americans are drinking more water doesn't mean soda companies are suffering.

Another industry tracker, Beverage Digest, also reported that in 2017 the amount of bottled water consumption would beat the carbonated soft drinks again.

Snowy Friday morning commute for the midstate
I think it's time to start taking this potential seriously, as the chance of heavy snow and high winds is rising for New Jersey. Heavy snow and blowing snow could produce very hard driving conditions with very poor visibility and deep snow cover on roads.

The popularity of packaged water started when Perrier was introduced in the 1970s.

Bottled water is the best selling beverage in the U.S. However, soda still generated more revenue of $39.5 billion in retail sales past year, compared to $21.3 billion for water.

"Where once it would have been unimaginable to see Americans walking down the street carrying plastic bottles of water, or driving around with them in their cars" cup holders, now that's the norm'.

In 2016, the total volume of bottled water increased by about 9 percent in comparisonto 2015. "And as some consumers are becoming wary of artificial sweeteners, they are abandoning diet as well as regular soda and instead are switching to bottled water", Doss said.

"Bottled water's ascent coincided with and encouraged seismic shifts in consumer preferences for healthier refreshment and rehydration", the release reads. "As the ultimate portable and affordable beverage, bottled water spawned new usage occasions and habits".
