Iraqi forces retake third of west Mosul from 'weakened' ISIL

The militants corralled the inmates, who had been serving sentences for a range of crimes - from murder and assaults to nonviolent offences - onto trucks and drove them to an isolated stretch of desert about 2 kilometres (1 miles) from the prison, HRW said.

Iraqi forces launched the operation to recapture west Mosul - the most populated urban area still under IS control - on February 19, retaking a series of areas as they advanced up from the south.

Iraqi forces have retaken more than a third of west Mosul from the Islamic State group, a commander said, as Baghdad's troops fought Sunday to advance deeper into the city.

The forces reportedly killed a prominent IS leader called Ali Salem al-Jabouri in Badush, other media said.

Saadi said CTS forces were battling ISIS inside Mosul al-Jadida and al-Aghawat on Sunday, and Iraq's Joint Operations Command said they recaptured the latter area later in the day.

"We are fighting an irregular enemy who hides among the citizens and uses tactics of booby-trapping, explosions, and suicide bombers, and the operation is taking place with precision to preserve the lives of the citizens", said Brigadier-General Yahya Rasool.

Iraqi forces have captured more than half of territories in western Mosul from the Daesh terrorist group, according to a military spokesman.

Fierce fighting has shaken Mosul in recent days as thousands of US-backed Iraqi soldiers and police battle to reclaim the country's second-largest city.

But the process of advancing in Mosul is laborious, Saadi said.

On Saturday, Iraqi forces said that a "large mass grave" had been found that contained the remains of hundreds of "civilian prisoners who were executed by (IS) gangs after they controlled the prison during their occupation of Mosul".

More than 200,000 Mosul residents have been displaced since the start of the campaign in October, of which more than 65,000 fled their homes in the past two weeks alone, according to the International Organisation for Migration.

So-called Islamic State (IS) is alleged to have killed hundreds of inmates, a lot of them Shia Muslims, when it seized Mosul in 2014.

In addition to helping Iraqi forces retake territory, McGurk said the US -led coalition has killed 180 ISIS leaders since the campaign against the militants began more than two years ago.
