Donald Trump's travel ban could wreck USA bid for 48-team tournament

  • Donald Trump's new travel ban could prevent America from holding World Cup

Trump issued a revised order this week that bans non-visa holders from six of those countries from traveling to the U.S. The new version, which is now facing legal challenges and may also be unconstitutional, still temporarily disbands refugee resettlement programs.

Responding to a question about President Donald Trump's order banning citizens from six Muslim-majority nations from travelling to the United States, FIFA boss Gianni Infantino said any nation bidding for the tournament would have clear rules.

The US last hosted the World Cup 23 years ago at World Cup USA '94, where Brazil triumphed after beating Italy on penalties in the final, courtesy of Italian sensation Roberto Baggio missing his deciding spot kick in the shootout.

Infantino added: "Mr Trump is the president of the United States of America and as such of course [I have] huge respect for what he does".

Trump's ban, which suspended the refugee program and entry into the US for people from six mostly-Muslim countries, has put a future bid's credibility into question.

Infantino said in London on Thursday: 'Whether that particular case was an injustice or not, we can leave it to the judgement of the referee (Germany's Deniz Aytekin).

Muhammad Ali's son stopped at airport, again
Mancini told the New York Daily News that the officials rejected Ali's identification and kept asking him where he was from. When they went through the procedure of airport routines, Homeland Security personnel detained Ali Jr. for 20 minutes.

Infantino stated that full bid requirements would be unveiled in the near future.

"We are now in the process of defining the bid requirements".

It's inevitable that Donald Trump's policies regarding immigrants, refugees and Muslim travelers to the United States will cause problems with global relations on all fronts, and that includes sports.

CONCACAF, which includes the U.S., Mexico and Canada, has not hosted since 1994 and is now the favorite for 2026. "If players can not come because of political decisions, or populist decisions, then the World Cup can not be played there".

"That is obvious. The requirements will be clear". It's general sporting criteria. Bids have to be submitted by December 2018, with the host to be decided in May 2020.

Federation Internationale de Football Association is finalising the requirements for bidding for the 2026 tournament, which in 2018 will be hosted in Russia and in 2022 in Qatar.
