This is the Pittsburhg Steelers forecasting the decline before it happens.
Timmons is signing a two-year, $12 million contract with the Miami Dolphins that includes $11 million guaranteed, according to ESPN.
Timmons, who was Mike Tomlin's first draft pick, played well in 2016, and carried a hefty price tag for his efforts a year ago too. Timmons will be taking over the role of leading a Dolphins defense that was ranked 30th in the league past year against the run, giving up 4.8 yards per carry.
The decision to take Timmons paid big dividends, as the former Florida State standout has developed into one of the league's best and most consistent inside linebackers.
The team appears to have wooed him in style during the opening hours of free agency.
The Steelers will have a new leading tackler for the first time since 2011 this season. The Steelers had the foresight to give Williams $2 million in base salary over the next two years knowing he can either grow into a full-time starter or remain as a productive special teamer and swing linebacker.
Timmons, 30, has 35.5 sacks, 14 forced fumbles and 12 interceptions in 10 seasons with the Steelers.
The Steelers did want Timmons back and kept in contact with his agent, Drew Rosenhaus.
Per Mark Kaboly of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Timmons and the Steelers were far apart on a new deal, and there was some concern they would allow him to hit free agency and move forward with Ryan Shazier and Vince Williams as the starting inside linebackers.
