  • Between Sept. 1 and Feb. 24 there have been 176 confirmed cases in the province

On the heels of a mumps outbreak at Barrington High School, officials at the Chicago Public Schools were monitoring a possible case of the highly infectious virus at an Andersonville elementary school.

Aside from the two confirmed cases at Barrington High School last week, the high school now has three probable cases of mumps and 16 suspected cases, Piotrowski said.

"CPS is supporting the Chicago Department of Public Health as it investigates a potential case of mumps".

What was previously considered a "cluster" is now a confirmed outbreak of the highly contagious mumps disease at suburban Barrington High School, Lake County Health Department officials announced Tuesday.

Three confirmed cases have been identified at Barrington High School, and a fourth unrelated case has been confirmed in Barrington, but that person has no connection to the school.

This is the third time this JCC has been evacuated so far this year, and the second time in two weeks, police said. Last week, police made an arrest in connection with a bomb threat made at the Manhattan ADL office on February 22.

Schools affected have been undergoing deep cleaning. Health officials recommend that students and staff that are not vaccinated either get the vaccine or stay home to stop the virus from spreading. A probable case also can involve someone who has been linked to another probable or confirmed case, he said.

Chicago Public Schools notified parents on Monday about a case of mumps at Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies, 1423 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., according to the district.

Ask your doctor about mumps if you develop acute painful swelling around the cheek area.

Mumps is passed through saliva and mucus, especially by sharing cups or other items, officials said. Unvaccinated children should be kept home if mumps breaks out in their schools.
