Today's deliberate attack on a military hospital in Kabul is a war crime - the latest incident targeting patients, healthcare personnel, and medical facilities in Afghanistan. One security official said the attackers were disguised in white doctors' uniforms. The heavily fortified United States mission is just across the road from the hospital.

Waziri said a suicide bomber had detonated his payload and another attacker was shot dead, and that one member of the security forces was killed and three wounded.

The attack comes while Taliban has warned Daesh's ringleader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, against waging a parallel insurgency in Afghanistan.

ISIL claimed the attack in a statement carried by Aamaq, its affiliated news agency, and through a verified telegram account.

Afghan chief executive Abdullah Abdullah said attacking a hospital was unjustifiable.

Afghan family detained in LA released but status unclear
Lawyers say the father obtained special immigrant visas for his family after working for the US government in Afghanistan. Talia Inlender, a senior staff attorney at Public Counsel, says the government agreed to release the family Monday.

Soldiers killed the attackers around 3:30 p.m. local time (6 a.m. Wednesday ET) after six hours of fighting. They say the arson attack came after a riot and attempt to escape from the overcrowded government-run centre.

As the fighting went on, some patients climbed out of the building and could be seen sheltering on window ledges. "We stand ready to assist Afghan security services", the alliance said in a Twiiter post.

President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani denounced the bloody attack as a coward terrorist act and vowed that Afghan government won't talk to terrorists, who are killing the innocent people of Afghanistan.

Defence Ministry spokesperson Dawlat Waziri said a number of militants were involved in the attack, though he has yet to confirm the number.

The Islamic State has established a solid presence on Afghanistan's border with Pakistan and mounted several high-profile attacks on civilians in Kabul over the past year, including some on prominent Shia targets.
