Champions League: Barcelona must make history to get past PSG

  • Neymar has netted 12 times and contributed 16 assists so far for Barcelona this season

No side in the European Cup's 61-year history has progressed after losing a first leg by four goals, although Barcelona coach Luis Enrique was beaming with optimism in his pre-game news conference.

Luis Enrique is missing just Aleix Vidal and Jeremy Mathieu from his squad as they welcome PSG to the Camp Nou for their decisive last sixteen tie in the Champions League.

Even if Barcelona are to score four goals tonight - never impossible when you have Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez up front - they would need to keep a clean sheet to give themselves any hope.

"We have a big advantage, but Arsenal are unsafe, so we have to go full throttle to win", said Spain worldwide Javi Martinez, who netted his first goal of the season in Saturday's 3-0 victory at Cologne. The result in the first leg was very clear but this is a knock-out tie and we're only at half-time.

"We need to remember the game lasts 94-95 minutes and we need to be patient and not get desperate", added Suarez. "But deep down I'm convinced we'll qualify for the quarter-finals".

"That isn't to say we will do it, but that we will be close".

If there is one side in world football with the firepower to dream it is Barcelona.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Tyrone Mings hit with FA charges
But that isn't something I think about because all the defenders, they try to stop you and me as a striker I try to score goals. Both players have until 6pm tomorrow to appeal the charge.

Rather than show any ill-effects from Enrique's decision, optimism in the Catalan capital of a stunning fightback has soared after thrashing Sporting Gijon and Celta Vigo 6-1 and 5-0 respectively in their last two outings.

Barcelona will be looking to pull off a miraculous Champions League come back when they host Paris Saint-Germain.

The 30-year-old told reporters: "We are all aware of how hard it is, but in football nothing is impossible". The players are aware of what is at stake.

Barcelona's performance has somewhat improved in the La Liga as they collected a couple of big wins and are now at the top of the table with a game more than Real Madrid.

However, the Uruguayan striker pleaded for patience from an expectant near 100,000 fans at the Camp Nou.

Emery's plan of attack for the night is simple, he said: "Our idea is to play with personality against a great team and to be focused in the continuity of what we did in the first leg but not think about the result". Barca will be especially desperate knowing they failed to score an away goal in Paris.

A late Neymar double left Barcelona needing one more goal with five minutes of added time to play, and Sergi Roberto popped up to score the all-important victor.
