It is believed to be the first time an animal has been attacked by poachers inside a European zoo. His horn - a single kilogram which could be worth as much as $60,000, according to current estimates - had been hacked off with a chainsaw, and a second, partially sawed-off horn had been left behind by the thieves.

The zoo said their other white rhinos, 37-year-old Gracie and five-year-old Bruno (pictured above) escaped what they described as a "massacre".

Global trade in rhino horn is banned by a United Nations convention and its sale is illegal in France.

Investigators said they were still trying to determine what weapon was used to kill the rhino, with the thickness of the animal's skin proving a hindrance to determining the caliber of the weapon.

Despite bans by global convention and French law, the illegal sale of rhino horns persists due to demand for use in traditional Asian medicine.

The sprawling home is somewhat isolated, sitting at the end of the quiet road, where it meets the Hundred Acre Cove. LaCross said it appears that Williams may have fallen and then as Haley went to call for help, she fell as well.

"Poaching is a criminal activity run by highly organized and sophisticated criminal networks", Susie Ellis, the executive director of the International Rhino Foundation, said in a statement. Just last month, two armed men stormed a rhino orphanage called Thula Thula in South Africa, holding the staff hostage and killing two baby rhinos that had previously been orphaned by poaching.

The rhino was shot three times in the head. It is thought that a poacher is behind the attack, as rhino's ivory horns are in high demand on the black market.

Animal parks across Europe have been put on alert.

A lot of them live in South Africa, where there have been hundreds of rhinos killed in recent years.

The IUCN said the total white rhinoceros population was between 19,500 and 21,500 and the species was considered "near threatened".
