  • Car owners report more problems with their vehicles for a second straight year

"Buyers are increasingly avoiding models with poor reputations for dependability, so manufacturers can't afford to let their quality slip", Dave Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power, said in a released statement.

"While many expensive and niche vehicles do have excellent quality, the fact is most consumers are shopping in the high-volume mainstream segments". This translates into a benefit of more than $1.3 billion for the 2014 model year alone.

As for the top best brands, Lexus and Porsche tied for the first place because of the fewest problems with 110 per 100 cars. This is the sixth consecutive year of Lexus topping the nameplate rankings in the VDS.

After Toyota is Buick with a score of 126 PP100 and Mercedes-Benz which received 131 PP100. While Lexus and Porsche rank the highest in the J.D.Power study among all nameplates, these luxury brands can cost tens of thousands more than the typical Subaru vehicle. Hyundai ranked sixth, up from the 19th spot a year ago.

Land Rover, Ford and Dodge also posted big improvements over last year's results, although all three brands still remains well below the industry average.

And, when Lexus models are also factored in, Toyota also came top in 10 of the 18 individual segment awards (the first time in the study's history) including for best midsize auto, best compact SUV, best compact vehicle and best minivan.

7 new Earth-sized planets discovered 'in habitable zone'
All seven of the planets lie closer to their star than the closest of our solar system's planets-Mercury-lies to the Sun. Trappist-1's planets were discovered by their transits, when they pass in front of the star and block some of its light.

The awardees include the Lexus ES, Lexus GS, Lexus RX, Toyota Avalon, Toyota Camry, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Toyota Prius, Toyota Prius v, Toyota Sienna and Toyota Venza. The study says "Continuing increases in technology-related problems industry-wide have contributed to dependability worsening for a second consecutive year". The industry average of 156 PP100 is a 4 PP100 increase from 2016.

More than 20 percent of all complaints were related to in-car technology, with plenty of owners reporting problems with their infotainment and audio systems, while battery failure was up by 44 percent compared to previous year.

Most of the reported problems also involved smartphones as well as other devices that refused to pair through its main connection, which is the Bluetooth.

The Lexus cars have been at the top for 6 straight years, meaning the company is worth to buy since it is considered the safest vehicle.

Fiat finished last by a significant margin, with 298 problems per 100 vehicles, up 74 percent from 2016 for the largest year-over-year dip of any brand.
