The target of the interceptor was launched from a ship in the Bay of Bengal, more than 2000 kilometers away from the Abdul Kalam Island. The computer network with the help of data received from sensors predicts the trajectory of the incoming ballistic missile and launches the PDV kept flight ready, at the appropriate moment. The development makes India the fourth country after the US, Russia and Israel to have successfully developed a ballistic missile defence system.

The robust missile shield will aid in securing its skies, key installations and assets from incoming enemy missiles. As per sources, only U.S. has similar capability.

Developed by the USA and Japan, the SM-3 Block IIA aims to tackle medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles. The test marks the first time that a ballistic missile has been targeted using the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IIA interceptor. More than a dozen industries are involved in fabricating the hardware components. Despite some delays in meeting the programme targets, it is a remarkable achievement because several advanced technologies were developed indigenously. "The whole operation was without man in the loop", defence sources said.
